Challenge
The rise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing public health threat that limits the ability of health professionals to treat diseases. AMR is a priority concern for key livestock sectors, including dairy, beef, and swine. Another significant issue is the potential transmission of AMR through the food supply chain, from livestock to consumers, both directly and indirectly. Effectively controlling AMR across animals, the environment, and humans requires a coordinated One Health approach. This includes developing mitigation strategies and implementing evidence-based policies to enhance antimicrobial stewardship. Currently, there are no standardized methods for monitoring AMR across sectors, which reduces the effectiveness of risk assessments and the development of novel strategies. Improved surveillance is critical to controlling the emergence and spread of resistance, even with responsible antimicrobial use. For Canada, this means enhancing existing surveillance systems to facilitate a coordinated management effort.
