Agri-Food Pathogens

Preparing for Emerging Agri-Food Pathogens

Preparing for emerging agri-food pathogens is a key research priority funded by Food from Thought. Since 2017, Food from Thought has supported researchers to build better surveillance, prevention and collaboration to protect our agri-food system as we face a rise in biological threats globally with diseases transferring from animals to humans, and pathogens contaminating our food supply.

This research has developed innovative strategies to prevent, detect and respond to biological threats that could grow into pandemics. From the development of new vaccines to enhanced surveillance and proactive prevention strategies, the results of these innovative research programs underscore the urgent need for greater attention and action to strengthen pandemic preparedness and mitigation efforts.

Key Messages

Global travel, urbanization, and climate change are increasing the frequency of these emerging diseases, requiring stronger surveillance systems and proactive prevention strategies. Research supported by the Food from Thought program highlights the following advances:

  1. Cross-sector collaboration on tracking livestock disease trends is helping control outbreaks.
  2. Big data technologies are improving food safety and reducing illness to enhance consumer confidence.
  3. Data-driven surveillance methods are forming the foundation of timely interventions and decision-making.
  4. Vaccines, biosecurity, and gut health innovations are reducing transmission in livestock and humans.

Canada needs robust collaboration across disciplines and sectors to tackle emerging pathogens more effectively, and researcher, industry and government need to lead the way to a more secure agri-food system.

Managing Agri-Food Pathogens Report

Currently, Canada’s systems for predicting, detecting and managing biological threats need improvement, as evidenced by recent outbreaks such as COVID-19 and large-scale food recalls.

Food from Thought has synthesized the research from our program and engaged interest-holders to prepare a report on advancing resilience to future pandemics and emerging agri-food threats.

The report also shares calls to action to prepare for emerging agri-food pathogens developed through collaboration between academia, government and industry.
